"Oil reserves in Canada were estimated at 172 billion barrels (27×109 m3) as of the start of 2015 . This figure includes the oil sands reserves that are estimated by government regulators to be economically producible at current prices using current technology.[1] According to this figure, Canada's reserves are third only to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia. Over 95% of these reserves are in the oil sands deposits in the province of Alberta.[2] Alberta contains nearly all of Canada's oil sands and much of its conventional oil reserves. The balance is concentrated in several other provinces and territories. Saskatchewan and offshore areas of Newfoundland in particular have substantial oil production and reserves.[3] Alberta has 39% of Canada's remaining conventional oil reserves, offshore Newfoundland 28% and Saskatchewan 27%, but if oil sands are included, Alberta's share is over 98%.[4]"
Canada has a diverse range of energy resources, making it one of the world's leading energy producers. Here are some key resources:
- Oil: Canada is the fourth-largest producer of crude oil globally, with 97% of its proven oil reserves located in the oil sands (1)
- Natural Gas: Canada is also the fifth-largest producer of natural gas (1)
- Coal: In 2023, Canada produced 47 million tonnes of coal, with 66% being metallurgical coal used for steel manufacturing (1)
- Hydroelectric Power: Canada's rivers discharge close to 7% of the world's renewable water, making hydroelectric power a significant energy source (2)
- Uranium: Canada has the third-largest reserves of uranium, which is used for nuclear energy (2)
Additionally, Canada is at the forefront of developing innovative technologies to improve energy production and use, contributing to a more sustainable future (2)
